Getting to Spetses

Getting there

  • From Piraeus (Athens’ main port) you can travel via hydrofoil / flying dolphin/catamaran. Trip time is about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the vessel and stops.
  • Alternatively, you can go by car/bus to the mainland port Kosta (southwestern Argolida coast) and then cross by ferry to Spetses.

Note: Cars are strictly regulated on Spetses. Private vehicles require a special permit and there are restrictions.

 Local transport on the island

  • The island is very walkable, especially the town center. But for reaching beaches or less-central areas you have several options.
  • Bicycles & motorbikes: many rental options. Note: there are time restrictions for mopeds/motorcycles on the coastal road between certain hours (summertime) to limit traffic.
  • Taxis on land: A Very limited number of taxis (only ~7 according to one source), so pre-booking is advisable.
  • Horse-drawn carriages: A traditional and picturesque way to move around parts of the town and to get to some nearby beaches.
  • Buses: Two main bus routes operate during the summer season, covering beach areas and outer parts of the island (west side, other side of the island). Times vary by season.

 Sea Taxis / Boat Transfers

This is especially important for Spetses because many beaches are better accessed by sea, and the island has a strong marine connection.
  • There is a dedicated sea-taxi station at the main port of Spetses (Dapia). Contact number: +30 22980-72072.
  • Sea taxis operate 24 hours and can take you from the port to other parts of the island, to beaches, or even to the mainland (e.g., Kosta / Porto Heli) on demand.
  • Typical usage:
    • Transfer from mainland (Kosta) to Spetses (for those driving to Kosta, parking there, then sea taxi to Spetses).
    • Beach transfers: From Spetses port out to beaches like Agioi Anargyroi, Agia Paraskevi, Zogeria during the summer. Traditional boats (“kaikia”) also run these routes and sea taxis complement them.
  • Fare examples: From Spetses ↔ Kosta by sea taxi ~ €30 (subject to change) for up to 8 persons capacity, luggage may incur extra.

 Tips & Practical Notes

  • Because the number of land taxis is small, it’s wise to book in advance, especially if you have luggage or arriving late.
  • Weather matters: If winds are strong in the Saronic Gulf, ferry/sea taxi services may get delayed or changed. Always check with the company.
(As one traveler noted: “Your ferry company will send you emails and texts to update you on any itinerary changes.”)
  • If you drive to the mainland port Kosta and park your car, make sure parking is secure, and reserve your boat seat/taxi ahead.
  • For beaches on the far side of the island (less reachable by road), the boat/sea-taxi option is often much quicker and scenic.
  • If staying in town, walking is a major part of the charm — many places are reachable on foot; but for exploring more remote beaches, consider sea taxis + bikes.
  • Time-schedules: Summer season has more frequent services; outside high-season, fewer trips. For example, bus routes and boat routes may be reduced off-peak.
