Villa Mondragone, is the largest factory in the Complex of the Tuscolan Villas. It was built in 1573 by Cardinal Altemps, Mondragone during the period of maximum expansion between the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque thanks to the involvement of famous architects such as Martino Longhi  the Elder initially and Jan van Santen - called the Vasanzio - subsequently.

The Villa took the name of "Mondragone", with reference to the winged dragon, the heraldic symbol of the Boncompagni (family name of Pope Gregory XIII, great friend and protector of Altemps), widely used as a decorative element.

It was the summer residence of the popes until 1626 when the new Pope Urban VIII moved it to Castel Gandolfo, marking the beginning of a progressive decadence of the entire complex of the Ville Tuscolane and Mondragone in particular.

From 1865 to 1953 the Villa experienced a period of renewed splendor thanks to the Jesuits who used it as a venue for an important educational institution: the Noble Collegio Mondragone.

In 1981 the Villa was sold by the Compagnia di Gesù to the University of Rome Tor Vergata which, after initial refurnishment, made it the University's representative office and uses it to organize various types of events.
